Celebrate your freedom to read
Saturday, September 16, 2006

Interested in reading all those banned books!!! Or would like to explore some of the best novels of the 20th century which have been challenged or banned. Fortunately, the American Library Association and many other organizations are fighting back with Banned Books Week, taking place this year Sept. 23-30.

For 25 years, libraries and bookstores nationwide have been celebrating the freedom to read during Banned Books Week, which is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, the Association of American Publishers, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the National Association of College Stores, and endorsed by the Library of Congress Center for the Book.

At, you can use Google Book Search to explore some of the best novels of the 20th century which have been challenged or banned. And while libraries and bookstores around the country celebrate the 25th anniversary of Banned Books Week with special readings, displays, and more, you just might end up with a visit to your local library or bookstore and an old favorite or a new banned book in hand.

Cache it out - Keep your PC Sparkling clean
If you want to free your computer of useless system files, try CleanCache 3.3. This free program removes Windows' temporary files, Office's most recently used history, and browser cache files. You can either run a complete Cleanup or just clean a set of Checked Items. One problem with this is that although Clean Cache has the setting to preserve useful cookies; but even with this option on, you will have to click 'Remember my address and password' again on many of the sites you visit regularly. So it is better not to clean your cookies using this software if you don't want to enter your password again anad again.

To install this sofwtare you will require to have Microsoft's .Net Framework, which you might have already got or you can get it at

Gmail - email ID naming tips
Do you know that if your gmail account is "" then "" is same and "" is same as "".
Actually the fact is that Gmail server doesn't recognise DOT(.) character.

Another tip is that, you can categorize or mark your email address using a "+" in your email address.
for eg. is same as

However if there is a space after the + sign then this won't work.
Say "hudibaba+how r" would not work; instead you can use "".

And as you all might be knowing another domain name for your Gmail account is "".

Note the above tips work only for GMAIL email ID.

So how did you find the above tips ? Do leave a comment.

Google to find Passwords
Some people are habituated to keep their passwords in a plain text log file. They don't even bother to encrypt that file. They might not have thouight how much dangerous is it to do such a stupid task. The consequence is that - Some n00b can just access that using Google.

Use following keyword with Google and you will understand. I am in Love with Google really.

filetype:log inurl:"password.log"

Here filetype : determines the type of file extension you want to search.
inurl : is used to look if the name is present in the url address.

Be aware of storing password in text files.

Enjoy Gooooooooooooooogling.

Rootkits - What is that?
Are ROOTKITS a new threat to PC users? Well only few of you might be knowing that it is possible to hide spyware or a virus in a way that can at times fool your traditional antivirus or spyware products. Some spyware programs are already using so-called rootkits to hide deep on your pc ! So better take precaution and download files only from trusted sites.

However, if you want to check your system for infection, then F-Secure has developed a new Beta version of their BlackLight Rootkit Eliminator. It is a tool that detects files, folders and processes that are hidden from the user and other programs. BlackLight is also able to remove hidden malware by renaming them.

Rootkits for Windows work in a different way and are typically used to hide malicious software from, for example, an antivirus program. It is used for malicious purposes by viruses, worms, backdoors and spyware. A virus combined with a rootkit produces what as known as full stealth viruses. Rootkits are more common in the spyware field and they are now also becoming more commonly used among virus authors as well.

Use Notepad as a Diary
This tip might be useful for people, who use notepad to write down any info on a day to day basis (//like diary//):

1. Open a blank Notepad file.

2. Write .LOG as the first line of the file, followed by a enter.

3. Save the file and close it.

4. Double-click the file to open it and notice that Notepad appends the current date and time to the end of the file and places the cursor on the line after.

4. Type your notes and then save and close the file.

5. Each time you open the file, Notepad repeats the process, appending the time and date to the end of the file and placing the cursor below it.

Five Orkut Tips and Tricks for Beginners (Part1)

Well most of you might be using orkut, if not just create an account at, and be in touch with your friends. Here I have collected some tips for Orkut beginners. I think most of the users might be aware of these tips, but if not you can always make use of these tips. And don't forget to comment about these tips and tricks - whether it was useful or not.

Some Tips for Orkut Beginners

1) When any one of your friend comes online his/her photo and name will be displayed first in the friends list. And when you click on view friends, his/her name is displayed on the friends list ( that is it should be the first name ) then it implies that he/she has viewed your profile. However, now-a-days Orkut just keeps a counter for a day, or a week and since Feb 2006, keeps updating the count.

2) Have you ever wondered - what the view network is really about? Seriously speaking, I found many of us don't know much about this. However this has got a lot of significance, and is one of the best method for knowing which friend is online and is viewing your profile most of the time.

You might be wondering how is it possible. If this is the case, then you might not have noticed the use of different colors on the 'view network' page.

  • When you view your friends network, the emphasis is placed on the most active members of the community.

  • On your network page, the person who most recently logged in to will be featured in the center of the page.

  • Others who have recently logged in are arranged around the middle person.

  • Each individual's photo has either a yellow, blue or pink background.

  • These colors correspond to their karma ratings (trusty = yellow, cool = blue, sexy = pink.)

  • Whichever rating is the highest determines the color of their background.

3) I hope that the above tip was very informational for you. However, you might be looking out for something different. If it is so, then this tip could be what you are looking for. Well this one infact is not a tip, but it is a small hack. As most of you who use orkut might know that, one can have any number of scraps and the scraps represent the level of your using orkut.

If you don't get scraped by anyone, or just want to increase your scrap counter, then here is a simple javascript that would do wonders for you. This simple java script will just increase the scraps to any number you want ...

First open the scrapbook page of your friend. (In case you want to increase your own count, make another account add that to your friends list and the follow the below given steps)
Do not write anything in the message box and then paste the code given below in the address bar and press go .

javascript:var i=0;function drm(){i=i+1;document.forms[0].elements[2].value="Floods in your scrap book"+""+i+"";document.getElementsByTagName('input').item(3).click();}; void(setInterval(drm,500));

4)Now that you have sent scraps to your friends. What happens if he/she sends you the same. Dont worry. Or if you would like to remove the same. Here is another Javascript for you.

javascript:var j=1; function drm(){javascript:void(0);document.forms[j].submit();j=j+2;};void(setInterval(drm,500));

Just copy the above script and paste in the address link ... press go.

But hold on there is one disadvantage with this. This script can delete only scraps from one page at a time. That implies if you have been flooded with 500 scraps then you have to do this 50 times, because one page contains only 10 scraps.

5) Another new interesting tip is sending a mirror scrap to your friend. Wondering what a mirror scrap is ? A Mirror scrap is the same message that you have typed to your friend but in a reverse pattern.

Example :-

If i scrap the following in my friends scrap book..
" Hi wassup buddy ... how is life ? "

This is how the scrap would look in his scrap
" ? efil si woh ... yddub pussaw iH "

Interesting right. Well beleive me I have not reverse typed it, but just added the following "& # 8 2 3 8" (without the quotes and spaces) in the beginning of the line. Then whatever you enter is displayed as a mirror in the scrap.

Boost up your Firefox Browser

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed up Firefox:

1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages 2-3 times faster now
