Video iPods - Get a Virus free
Apple has jus discovered that a "small" number of video iPods sold after September 12, 2006, had a preloaded windows virus (RavMonE.exe) in them. This virus is said to infect only Windows based computers.

However, most of the up to date virus scanners will detect and clean this virus.

Note : The iPod nano, iPod shuffle and Mac OS X are not affected and all video iPods are now shipping virus free.

IE7 Can Disclose Your Sensitive Information
Some security researchers have already a week ago discovered an information disclosure vulnerability  in IE7 hours after its official release.

The flaw is caused by an error in the handling of redirections for URLs with the "mhtml:" URI handler. Actually, this flaw was observed by Secunia in earlier version of IE6 and Outlook Express but still remains unresolved. It is said that this flaw can be exploited by malicious people to disclose potentially sensitive information.

Secunia has constructed a test, which is available at:

 http://secunia.com/Internet_Explorer_Arbitrary_Content_Disclosure_Vulnerability_Test/

The curent solution available to this is to disable active scripting support.

Teens Rule - Google-Wikipedia-MySpace
A recent study conducted by Dr. Sam Vaknin of Google keywords over the past several years reveals that content created by teenagers and young adults on Wikipedia or social networks are often touted by the search engine as the most authoritative pages on a given subject.

The article also states that "This is Google's policy now: Wikipedia articles regardless of their
length or quality or even mere existence are placed by Google's
algorithm high up in the search results."

So son't you think there is some intimate relationship between Google and Wikipedia. However. it is said that googles latest algorithm codenamed Big Daddy, still calculates page ranks according to the number of incoming links.

The study also reveals that "the more incoming links from MySpace a Website has - the higher it is placed in the search results" . So webmasters now know what they have to look for.

You can read the article here.

Celebrate your freedom to read
Saturday, September 16, 2006

Interested in reading all those banned books!!! Or would like to explore some of the best novels of the 20th century which have been challenged or banned. Fortunately, the American Library Association and many other organizations are fighting back with Banned Books Week, taking place this year Sept. 23-30.

For 25 years, libraries and bookstores nationwide have been celebrating the freedom to read during Banned Books Week, which is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, the Association of American Publishers, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the National Association of College Stores, and endorsed by the Library of Congress Center for the Book.

At google.com/bannedbooks, you can use Google Book Search to explore some of the best novels of the 20th century which have been challenged or banned. And while libraries and bookstores around the country celebrate the 25th anniversary of Banned Books Week with special readings, displays, and more, you just might end up with a visit to your local library or bookstore and an old favorite or a new banned book in hand.

Cache it out - Keep your PC Sparkling clean
If you want to free your computer of useless system files, try CleanCache 3.3. This free program removes Windows' temporary files, Office's most recently used history, and browser cache files. You can either run a complete Cleanup or just clean a set of Checked Items. One problem with this is that although Clean Cache has the setting to preserve useful cookies; but even with this option on, you will have to click 'Remember my address and password' again on many of the sites you visit regularly. So it is better not to clean your cookies using this software if you don't want to enter your password again anad again.

To install this sofwtare you will require to have Microsoft's .Net Framework, which you might have already got or you can get it at www.microsoft.com.

Gmail - email ID naming tips
Do you know that if your gmail account is "hudibaba@gmail.com" then "hudi.baba@gmail.com" is same and "HuDi.BaBa@gmail.com" is same as "h.u.d.i.b.a.b.a@gmail.com".
Actually the fact is that Gmail server doesn't recognise DOT(.) character.

Another tip is that, you can categorize or mark your email address using a "+" in your email address.
for eg. hudibaba+itforstudent@gmail.com is same as hudibaba+anyname@gmail.com

However if there is a space after the + sign then this won't work.
Say "hudibaba+how r u@gmail.com" would not work; instead you can use "hudibaba+how+r+u@gmail.com".

And as you all might be knowing another domain name for your Gmail account is "yourAccount.Name@googlemail.com".

Note the above tips work only for GMAIL email ID.

So how did you find the above tips ? Do leave a comment.

Google to find Passwords
Some people are habituated to keep their passwords in a plain text log file. They don't even bother to encrypt that file. They might not have thouight how much dangerous is it to do such a stupid task. The consequence is that - Some n00b can just access that using Google.

Use following keyword with Google and you will understand. I am in Love with Google really.

filetype:log inurl:"password.log"

Here filetype : determines the type of file extension you want to search.
inurl : is used to look if the name is present in the url address.

Be aware of storing password in text files.

Enjoy Gooooooooooooooogling.

Rootkits - What is that?
Are ROOTKITS a new threat to PC users? Well only few of you might be knowing that it is possible to hide spyware or a virus in a way that can at times fool your traditional antivirus or spyware products. Some spyware programs are already using so-called rootkits to hide deep on your pc ! So better take precaution and download files only from trusted sites.

However, if you want to check your system for infection, then F-Secure has developed a new Beta version of their BlackLight Rootkit Eliminator. It is a tool that detects files, folders and processes that are hidden from the user and other programs. BlackLight is also able to remove hidden malware by renaming them.

Rootkits for Windows work in a different way and are typically used to hide malicious software from, for example, an antivirus program. It is used for malicious purposes by viruses, worms, backdoors and spyware. A virus combined with a rootkit produces what as known as full stealth viruses. Rootkits are more common in the spyware field and they are now also becoming more commonly used among virus authors as well.

Use Notepad as a Diary
This tip might be useful for people, who use notepad to write down any info on a day to day basis (//like diary//):

1. Open a blank Notepad file.

2. Write .LOG as the first line of the file, followed by a enter.

3. Save the file and close it.

4. Double-click the file to open it and notice that Notepad appends the current date and time to the end of the file and places the cursor on the line after.

4. Type your notes and then save and close the file.

5. Each time you open the file, Notepad repeats the process, appending the time and date to the end of the file and placing the cursor below it.
